Apollo is the God of light, music, poetry, prophecy, archery, and healing.He is the son of

. Apollo's Roman name is Phoebus. Apollo never helped heros because he thought that the hero should know their "place" and stay out of affairs with the Gods. Apollos sacred animal is the swan. People say that Apollo flew to the land of the Hyperboreans on the back of a swan. Apollos first achievment was to rid the city of Delphi of the serpent Python. After Apollo slayed the serpent at Delphi, he took over the art of prophecy from the God Pan. Apollo took over the oracle at Delphi and became closely associated with the art of prophecy ever since.
Apollo was only challenged once for his musical talents. A satyr named Marsays found a flute made from the bones of a stag.(
threw it when the Gods made fun of her when she played it and puffed out her cheeks.)The flute played wonderful music. Listeners even compared his playing of the music with Apollos lyre. Apollo was mad and jealous of the satyr and he immediatly challenged him to a contest.They both agreed that the winner could choose any punishment for the loser. The jury of Muses agreed that both their music was wonderful, so Apollo challenged Marsays to play his instrument upsidedown and sing while playing. Marsays, of course, could not do it since his instrument was a flute. The Muses judged Apollo as the winner. However, Apollo was quite brutal with his punishment, he skinned the satyr alive and he nailed his skin to a pine tree.
Apollo had many children, but never married. One day, Apollo made
(the god of love) mad. Apollo was apparently mocking him and saying he had terrible aim with a bow and arrow, so Eros shot him. Apollo now loved
. However, Daphne didn't like Apollo and ran away to the mountains. Apollo was not going to give up. He first eliminated his competition, Lecippus, son of King Oenomaus of Pisa who also liked
. Lecippus tried to get close to Daphne by pretending to be a girl. Apollo tricked the nymphs to bathe naked. When Lecippus took off his clothes, they saw he was a boy, so the nymphs killed him.
