The name Medusa means "Sovereign female wisdom." She is a Gorgon, Who was decapitated by the hero Perseus. She was one of three Gorgon sisters. Her two sister's names were Stheno and Euryale. They were children of the ancient marine deities Phorcys and his sister Ceto, or, in some cases, Typhon and Echidna. Her sisters both had eternal life, But Medusa was mortal. She had been worshiped in Libya by the Libyan Amazons as their Serpent-Goddess. Medusa was actually known in Old Europe several thousand years before she had ever been in Greek Mythology.

At one time, She was a beautiful maiden, But then Athena turned her into an ugly monster. After Athena had done her job and transformed Medusa, She sent Perseus to cut off her head. Perseus was told to only look at Medusa's reflection through his shield, because looking straight into her eyes, can turn any man into stone. Even after her head had been cut off, it still possessed the power that will parilyze anyone for life. The moment Perseus had beheaded Medusa, Pegasus was said to have sprung from her Headless body, along with Chrsaor, the hero of the golden sword. Perseus used her head to slay the Sea-dragon Cetus then gave the head to Athena and she had mounted it onto a breastplate, but, some believe it had been mounted on a shield.
